GENERATIONS - FATHERS DAY IS ALMOST HERE

FAMED GERMAN PAINTER OF THE LATE 1800s

The 170 th anniversary of the birth in 1846 in Hannover Germany of my Mother's Grandfather - my Great Grandfather - Conrad Beckmann is only a little way behind us and tomorrow is Fathers Day.

The Generations tumble on, and he is now the Great Great Grandfather of our three children : Marianne, Justine and Matthew., and the Great Great Great Grandfather of our Grandchildren : Stephen,Josephine,Gabrielle and Anastasia DIXON, 
and Emily, Christopher and Daniel Whiting.

Great Grandad, you really started something! Thank God that you did , for you would be really proud to see how the shoot of the tree via your youngest son Wilhelm Toby Leonhardt Edward Beckmann flourished through his eldest child Elsie Georgina Beckmann ,not to mention other branches.

Congratulations on your Birthday just past and you will be remembered on Fathers Day.   Congratulations on the fact that your paintings are still coming to light via the Internet as late as a few days ago. My Great Grandfather, Conrad Beckmann was a very successful painter of the time with major commisssions in Germany, sales in America and England and even having some of his work reported on in pre Federation Sydney!


His success had been marred by the long term tragic illness of his wife , with what appears to have been stomach cancer over more than ten years. Her care and "treatment"such as it was in those days consumed most of his income it seems , and led, after her death to my Grandfather's decision to migrate to Australia.The Blog :http://edwardbeckmann.blogspot.com/

They were both good men of pleasant humour, not without faults no doubt,but solid citizens. Now they are literally out of time - may they rest in peace!

AN INTRODUCTION

There are already four Blogs which are my responsibility -  Edward Beckmann - concerns the life and times of my maternal Grandfather, Conrad Beckmann - concerns the life, times and works of his father, Carl Dopmeyer - concerns the life , times and works of my Great Great Grandfather,Conrad's Father-in-Law; the fourth is VEXILLA REGIS which concerns everything to do with the Catholic Church and I regard it as a religious work dedicated to the glory of God Who established and preserves His Church.

Recently, I had brought to my attention an 81 page account of his life written by my Grandfather Edward Beckmann. The circumstances of its preservation through the 49 years since Grandad's death at 84 yrs are unusual - more of that later. But it tended to concentrate my mind very readily on the possibility of doing something similar concerning my own life and times and thinking, so that my descendants in their old age might also have an inkling of how things were way back "now", and of why this or that happened.

BUT NOUGHT is the result of that idea.My intention is to identify posts about events in my life by a date, usually a year - major events by a specific date.  Other general commentary will be separately identified. It all sounds very logical, but reality does seem to break in on our plans and intentions from time to time - we shall see.
